For Families
Working together to help your child thrive
At Landon School, our ethos is Safe, Happy, Learning. We believe children thrive when they feel understood, valued and supported, and when families and school work together.
You know your child best. Your understanding of their strengths, interests, communication and everyday experiences helps us provide meaningful learning and the right support.
Whether you are new to Landon or already part of our community, we want you to feel welcome, informed and involved in your child’s education.
Communication between home and school
Regular communication helps us celebrate achievements, understand challenges and provide consistency for your child.
The class teacher
Your child’s class teacher is your first point of contact for questions about learning, classroom routines and day-to-day support.
Please share anything that may affect your child’s experience at school, including changes to routines, sleep, health or family circumstances. Understanding these changes helps us respond sensitively to their needs.
Home–school diaries
We use home–school diaries to exchange everyday information. Please check your child’s diary regularly and use it to share updates, questions and achievements from home.
Continue using the same diary until it is full, then return it to school for replacement. If it is lost or damaged, please contact the class team.
Evidence for Learning
Evidence for Learning (EFL) helps us share photographs, videos and evidence of your child’s progress. It gives you opportunities to see their learning and celebrate achievements that may otherwise be difficult to capture.
You can also share experiences and successes from home. These help us understand how your child uses their skills in different situations.
If you need an account, help accessing EFL or access for another family member, please contact your child’s class teacher.
For anything urgent, please telephone the school office rather than relying on a diary or EFL entry being read immediately.
Wellbeing, regulation and therapy
Feeling safe and understood helps children engage with learning. We work to understand what supports each pupil’s wellbeing, including their communication, sensory needs, relationships and routines.
Teachers, support staff and therapists work together to embed appropriate strategies into everyday school life. Landon’s therapy approach includes support across the school, targeted approaches and specialist individual input where identified.
Please speak with your child’s class teacher if you would like to discuss their support or explore approaches that can be shared between home and school.

Supporting learning at home
Learning at home can happen through small, enjoyable moments within everyday life. You do not need to recreate the classroom.
Start with something your child enjoys, use familiar communication supports and allow time for them to respond.
Offer meaningful choices
Give your child opportunities to choose between familiar activities, books or songs. Recognise their way of choosing, whether through looking, reaching, signing, symbols or speech.
Build independence into routines
Encourage your child to take part in a manageable step, such as putting clothes in a basket, finding their shoes or placing a cup on the table.
Where helpful, use I do, We do, You do: show a step, try it together, then offer your child the opportunity to have a go with the support they need.
Join their play
Follow your child’s interests. Copy an action, share a playful sound or take a turn in a favourite activity. Allow space for them to respond without pressure.
Share stories and experiences
Enjoy books, family photographs, songs or familiar objects together. Talk, sign or point to what your child notices. A shared look, gesture or moment of enjoyment is valuable participation.
Celebrate and share
Tell us about achievements through EFL or the home–school diary. Your child’s class team can help you choose activities that connect with their learning priorities.
Everyday school life
Attendance
If your child will be absent, please contact the school office before 9am on each day of absence.
If attending school is becoming difficult, please speak with us. We want to understand the barriers and work with you to identify appropriate support.
Attendance information and guidance
Clothing and uniform
Uniform is optional at Landon. We recognise that clothing preferences and sensory needs can affect comfort and participation.
Please choose comfortable clothing that supports your child’s needs and label their belongings clearly.
PE kit
Please provide a labelled and comfortable PE kit, including a T-shirt, shorts or tracksuit bottoms, trainers or pumps, and spare socks.
Keeping a kit at school supports opportunities to practise dressing, hygiene and independence.
Meals and dietary needs
Please tell us about allergies, dietary requirements or any difficulties your child experiences around food and eating. Contact the office for the current menu and speak with the class teacher about individual support.
Health and medication
Keep the school informed about changes to your child’s health or care needs. Please contact the office to agree medication arrangements and complete any required documentation before sending medication to school.
Transport, trips and activities
Please inform the school about changes to collection arrangements. If your child uses arranged transport, notify the transport provider as well as the school about relevant changes or absences.
Information about trips, swimming and class activities is shared separately via Arbor, including any consent requirements and equipment your child needs.
Family support and involvement
We want families to feel comfortable asking for help. Whether you have a question about routines, communication, attendance, wellbeing or a change at home, a conversation can be a useful first step.
Contact the school office and ask to speak with the Safeguarding, Attendance and Family Liaison Officer. We can discuss your concerns and help you reach the appropriate member of staff or service.
Coffee mornings, workshops and family sessions provide opportunities to meet other families, share experiences and learn about approaches used at school. Invitations and arrangements are shared through school communications.
For support beyond school, we can help you identify your home local authority’s SEND Local Offer and SEND Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS).
Transitions and preparation for the future
Starting school, changing classes and moving towards a new stage of education can feel significant for children and families.
We work with you to understand what helps your child feel secure. Sharing their interests, communication methods, familiar routines and successful strategies helps us prepare for change together.
Preparation for life is part of everyday learning at Landon. Making choices, asking for help, developing self-care skills, building relationships and participating in the community all contribute to greater independence.
As your child grows, their strengths, interests, aspirations and support needs help shape discussions about their future.
Keeping children safe
If you are worried about a child’s safety or welfare, please contact our safeguarding team. You do not need to wait for a review meeting.
