Primary (Ages 5 to 11)

Our Primary phase lays the foundations for everything that follows. For many pupils, Landon is their first experience of school – or their first experience of a school that truly works for them – so our priorities are helping children feel safe, building trusting relationships and establishing the routines that make learning possible.

What learning looks like

Communication comes first. Using the SCERTS framework, we identify how each child communicates now and build from there – whether through speech, signing, symbols, communication aids or a combination. Alongside communication, we focus on emotional regulation: helping children recognise and manage how they feel so they are ready to engage and learn.

Play is a serious part of the curriculum in the Primary phase. Through structured and free play, children develop interaction, curiosity, problem-solving and early academic skills – you can read more on our page The Power of Play. Early literacy and numeracy are taught in ways that are practical, sensory and meaningful, matched to each child's pathway.

A typical Primary day

Days follow a predictable rhythm, with visual timetables, sensory and movement breaks, and individual and small-group teaching. Therapy input is integrated across the day rather than delivered in isolation.

By the end of the Primary phase, our aim is that every child has a reliable way to communicate, growing independence in everyday routines, and the confidence to take on the next step in their learning.
