Learning Beyond The Classroom

For our pupils, the skills that matter most are the ones they can use in the real world. That is why learning beyond the classroom is a planned, purposeful part of the curriculum at Landon – not an occasional treat.

Learning in the community

Pupils regularly learn in the local community: shopping for ingredients and cooking with them, ordering in a café, using the library, visiting the park, and travelling on public transport. These experiences allow pupils to practise communication, independence and self-regulation skills in the settings where they will actually need them – which is essential for autistic learners, who often need support to generalise skills from one context to another.

Enrichment and experiences

Alongside community learning, we plan enrichment experiences that broaden our pupils' horizons – trips linked to curriculum themes, sporting and physical activities, and visits that build cultural capital. Every experience is chosen with purpose and prepared carefully: social stories, visual supports and familiar staffing help pupils access new places and experiences with confidence.

Safety and planning

All off-site learning is thoroughly risk-assessed and staffed to the same high ratios as our classrooms. Families are kept fully informed, and activities are personalised so that every pupil can take part at a level that is right for them.

The result: pupils who are more confident, more independent and more at home in their communities – exactly what preparing for adulthood requires.
