Pathways
No two learners at Landon are the same, so we do not teach them as if they were. Every pupil follows one of three curriculum pathways – Explore, Semi-Formal or Formal – matched to how they learn, not simply how old they are.
How the pathways work
Our pathway model is informed by the Equals curriculum, a nationally recognised framework designed for learners with severe and complex learning difficulties, together with the SCERTS framework, which places communication and emotional regulation at the heart of every pupil's programme.
- Explore – for learners who learn best through sensory, exploratory and play-based experiences. The focus is on engagement, communication, regulation and interaction.
- Semi-Formal – for learners who benefit from practical, meaningful learning in real contexts. The focus is on functional skills, independence and applying learning to everyday life.
- Formal – for learners who can access more structured, subject-based learning. The focus is on adapted academic study with externally accredited courses where appropriate.
The right pathway, reviewed continually
Pathway placement is based on careful assessment of each pupil's communication, cognition and learning style, and it is never fixed. We use ipsative assessment – measuring each pupil's progress against their own starting point – and review pathways regularly, so pupils can move between them as they develop.
Whichever pathway a pupil follows, the destination is the same: the most independent, fulfilling adult life possible. Read more on the Explore, Semi-Formal and Formal pages in this section.
